Pay with a gift card or store credit

What your customers see at checkout, how balances are used, and how to add a gift card to an account.

  1. 1

    Enter the code at checkout

Under Gift card or store credit, the customer types the code into Gift card code and clicks Apply. Capitals, spaces and dashes don’t matter. The card pays as much of the order as it can, and the rest stays on the card for next time. In the classic cart and checkout, the button is called Apply gift card.

  2. 2

    Use store credit

Signed-in customers with a balance see Use my store credit. It’s ticked automatically, and they can untick it to save the credit for later.

  3. 3

Add a gift card to an account

Customers can also go to My account → Store credit, enter the code under Add a gift card and click Add to my credit. The whole balance moves to their store credit, so it’s used automatically on their next orders. The card can’t then be used by anyone else.

How the money is counted

  • Gift cards and store credit are a way of paying, not a discount: tax and shipping are charged as normal, and the order total is what the gift card covers.
  • Gift cards are used first, in the order they were added, then store credit. Up to 5 gift cards fit on one order.
  • Gift cards and store credit can’t pay for gift cards. In a cart with other products, they pay for everything except the gift cards; in a cart of only gift cards, the checkout says so and doesn’t ask for a code.
  • If the order is cancelled or the payment fails, the money goes back onto the card or into the customer’s store credit. It’s taken again if the customer pays after all.
  • If gift cards cover the whole order, the customer still clicks Place Order, with nothing left to pay.
  • Store credit that expires soonest is spent first, so customers lose as little as possible.
