Sell gift cards
Turn a product into a gift card, at set amounts or any amount the buyer chooses. The card is emailed when the order is paid.
- 1
Make a gift card product
In WordPress, go to Products → Add New Product (or open an existing product). In the Product data box, tick Gift card. The price is the card’s value: a product priced 50 makes a 50 gift card. Gift cards are always virtual, so there’s nothing to ship.
- 2
Let buyers choose the amount (optional)
Open the Gift card tab that appears in the Product data box and tick Buyers choose the amount. Set the Smallest amount and, if you like, the Largest amount. The product page then shows an Amount field; it starts at the regular price, if you set one. This works for simple products.
- 3
Or offer a few set amounts
Choose Variable product, add an attribute such as Amount with values 25, 50 and 100, and give each variation its price. Tick Gift card on the parent product.
- 4
Publish and check the product page
Under Who is it for?, buyers enter the Recipient’s email and, if they like, the recipient’s name, their own name and a message. If they leave the email empty, the gift card is sent to them instead, so they can print it or pass it on.
When the gift card is sent
- The code is created and emailed as soon as the order is Processing or Completed, so card payments send it straight away.
- For bank transfer or cash on delivery, it’s sent when you mark the order Processing.
- Buying 3 of a gift card makes 3 separate cards, each with its own code.
- The order shows the codes’ last four characters and has a note saying who they were sent to.
- If you cancel or fully refund the order, its gift cards are disabled, so a reversed payment can’t leave a working card. Enable one again in WooCommerce → Gift cards if that was a mistake.
Expiry
Cards follow the shop’s setting in WooCommerce → Gift cards. To give this product’s cards a different expiry, enter a number of months in Cards expire after on its Gift card tab (0 means never). Check the minimum validity your country requires first.
To change the email’s subject, heading or colours, go to WooCommerce → Settings → Emails and open Gift card. It uses your WooCommerce email design.
Tip: Gift cards are sold at face value: Joinery pricing rules never discount them, and they don’t count toward a rule’s cart total. In most cases set the product’s Tax status to None, because tax is charged when the card is spent. If you do charge tax on it, the card is worth the price including tax.
