Refund or give store credit

Refund an order as store credit instead of money back, or add credit to a customer’s account.

Refund an order as store credit

  1. 1

    Open the order

Go to WooCommerce → Orders and open the order. The Store credit box is on the right.

  2. 2

Enter the amount and a reason

The amount starts at what’s left to refund on the order; lower it for a partial refund. The customer sees the reason in their credit history.

  3. 3

    Click Refund as store credit

WooCommerce records a refund on the order, without sending any money back, and the amount is added to the customer’s store credit. They can spend it on their next order.

Store credit belongs to a customer account, so guest orders can’t be refunded as credit. Refund those the usual way, or create a gift card for the amount in WooCommerce → Gift cards.

Add or remove credit by hand

Go to Users, open the customer and scroll to Store credit. Enter an amount in Add or remove (a negative amount removes credit, never more than they have), add a Note the customer will see and, for credit you add, an optional Expires on date. Click Update User.

Does store credit expire?

  • Credit from a refund never expires. Credit you add by hand expires only if you set Expires on.
  • Credit from a gift card keeps that card’s expiry date, and credit from a reward rule follows the rule.
  • Customers see how much expires and when on My account → Store credit. Credit that expires soonest is spent first.
